Acara M! Countdown di M.Net 18 Juli 2007 menjadi tempat penampilan pertama Girl's Generation. Mereka membawakan lagu "다시 만난 세계 (Into the New World)" yang dirilis sebagai singel pertama Girl's Generation, Agustus 2007. Singel tersebut juga berisi dua lagu lain, "Beginning" dan "Perfect For You (소원)", serta versi instrumental "다시 만난 세계 (Into the New World)". Judul lagu "Perfect For You" nantinya berganti judul sebagai "Honey" dalam album perdana mereka, Girls' Generation. Singel "Into the New World" diikuti kegiatan promosi. Mereka tampil dalam acara Popular Songs di SBS, Show! Music Core di MBC, dan Music Bank di KBS.
Album perdana 소녀시대 (Girls' Generation) dirilis akhir musim gugur 2007 dengan lagu andalan berjudul sama.
Music Core bulan Januari 2009.[7] Mereka membawakan lagu "Gee" dan "Him Nae/Way To Go" yang juga berasal dari album mini Gee. Di tangga lagu M.Net, "Gee" menjadi pemegang rekor lagu nomor satu yang bertahan paling lama (8 minggu) mengalahkan "Nobody" dari Wonder Girls.[8][9] Girls' Generation menempati peringkat pertama 9 minggu berturut-turut dengan lagu "Gee",[10], sekaligus memecahkan rekor acara Music Bank di KBS yang sebelumnya dipegang oleh Jewelry dengan "One More Time" (7 minggu berturut-turut).[11]
Mereka kembali dengan singel baru "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" (bahasa Korea: "소원을 말해봐", "Tell Me Your Wish") yang dirilis secara digital, 22 Juni 2009.[12][13] Album mini ini menampilkan duet Jessica dan anggota Shinee yang bernama Onew

2NE1 (Hangul: 투애니원; RR: tu-aeniwon; pronounced "to anyone"[1] or "twenty-one"[2]) is a South Korean girl group created by YG Entertainment. First appearing in a Cyon commercial campaign with Big Bang for LG Telecom, their debut single "Fire" was released on May 6, 2009 and on May 17 the song premiered on SBS's Inkigayo.
CL, Bom, Dara, and Minzy make up the four membered group.
The group's name 2NE1 stands for "New Evolution of the 21st Century" or "21st Century New Evolution".[3]
History
The group was first mentioned by the press in late 2008, YG Entertainment announced that the group would consist of four members and debut sometime in May 2009.[4] The company stated that the group had trained for 4 years, and that their debut album would contain songs produced by 1TYM Leader Teddy Park.[4][5][6] The group's name was initially announced as "21"; however, due to the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was quickly renamed "2NE1".[7]
[edit] 2009: Debut
2NE1's first song was "Lollipop", digitally released on March 27, 2009.[4] The song was created for LG to promote their Cyon phone, and it was a joint release with Big Bang; the commercial/music video debuted on March 28, 2009.[8] Although it was not a promoted single (as it was an advertisement song, there were problems with network chart eligibility[9]), "Lollipop" proved to be a strong chart hit, going to #1 on various online charts[9] and topping music television network M.Net's online chart for four weeks in a row.[10]
On April 30, Yang Hyun Suk revealed that 2NE1's debut song would be a hip-hop/reggae song, and that it would be digitally released on May 6, 2009.[11] Titled "Fire", the song was fully written and produced by 1TYM's Teddy Park.[12][unreliable source?] Teasers of the song were released on their official website at the beginning of May, with a 20-second clip released on May 1.[13]
"Fire" was released as planned on May 6, with two versions of the music video — a "space" version and a "street" version — released the same day.[14] The videos received over one million views in a day.[15] The group's first performance of the song was on May 17, 2009, on SBS's Inkigayo,[16] beginning the group's activities.
Both the song and the group became popular online, with the song topping M.Net's online chart and the group's name becoming a top search term.[17] The group was also rewarded with three Cyworld Digital Music Awards, with both "Lollipop" and "Fire" winning "Song of the Month" awards and the group winning "Rookie of the Month" for May 2009.[18] They received their first Mutizen award during their fourth stage performance in SBS Inkigayo (Popular Song) on June 14, 2009. They received their second Mutizen award on SBS Inkigayo on June 21, 2009. Along with their awards successes, 2NE1 signed a deal with Fila to become the new models for their commercial campaign 2 days after 2NE1's Mutizen win.[19]
"I Don't Care" was released as the second single on July 1, 2009,[20] with promotions starting in early July.[21] YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk stated at the time that the song would demonstrate a softer, more feminine image.[20]
An unplugged "reggae" version of the song was performed on SBS's Inki Gayo music show, signaling the end of promotions for the song.[22] However, due to the remix's popularity, it was released to digital outlets on September 3, 2009.[22]
Along with three other groups representing Korea, 2NE1 performed in the 6th Asia Song Festival in September 2009, where they received the 2009's "Asian Newcomer's Award."[23]
2010: Return to group activities, and To Anyone
On February 9, 2010, "Try to Follow Me" (Korean: "날 따라 해봐요", "Nal ddara haebwayo") was released to digital outlets, without prior notice and was used as a theme song for Samsung Corby Folder.[24] Over the summer, 2NE1 traveled to Los Angeles, California in order to record English songs for a possible American debut with The Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am. The group has recorded ten songs thus far.[25]
The first studio and full length album, To Anyone, was slated for release on September 9, 2010 and was a big success.[26] The album contains 12 tracks including three title songs, namely "Clap Your Hands", "Go Away" and "Can't Nobody", which were promoted simultaneously. They won #1 on M! Countdown for the song Clap Your Hands on the day of their comeback, followed by a K-Chart win the next day on Music Bank for the Song Go Away, and a mutizen a week after their Inkigayo comeback for the song Can't Nobody.
To promote the album, the group made its first entertainment show appearance as a group on KBS's variety-talk show Seungseung Janggu.
They were appointed Ambassadors to promote Laws on September 29, 2010.
